Control arms are hinged links that connect a vehicle’s frame to the axle, steering knuckle, or hub assembly. To reduce road noise, vibration, and harshness, control arms rely on bushings at their mounting points. Over time, these bushings—and sometimes the control arms themselves—wear out from heat, impacts, and everyday driving. Understanding how they work and when they need replacement can help you maintain ride quality and safety and prolong tire life. Control arm bushings aren’t all created equal. Manufacturers often use different materials to balance ride quality and handling performance, with softer materials offering more flexibility, comfort, and compliance, and stiffer materials producing more feedback and better handling in tight turns. Rubber bushings: Lowest cost. Factory-style bushings that prioritize comfort and noise reduction. Ideal for daily drivers, but they wear faster.

Worn control arm bushings often exhibit symptoms similar to those of damaged control arms, though typically less severe. Signs of worn bushings may include one or more of the following:
Squeaking or creaking sounds
Clunking during braking or acceleration
Excessive vibration
Loose or vague steering feel
Uneven tire wear
Worn control arm bushings are often tied to normal wear and tear. However, premature wear can result from severe abuse or neglect of maintenance. Some reasons control arms may degrade quickly include:
Heat cycles from the engine and brakes
Constant flexing during suspension travel

Road salt and corrosion
While more compliant and comfortable, rubber bushings are highly susceptible to cracking and drying out as they age. Keep an eye on bushings as a vehicle ages—especially if you suspect they are original components.
While replacement bushings may be less expensive than replacing the entire control arm up front, they often carry higher labor costs due to the need to remove the old bushings and press in the new ones. Bushings typically cost $20 to $100 each, but expect labor to nearly double compared to replacing the entire control arm. For this reason, many mechanics recommend replacing the whole assembly rather than just bushings.
Driving with worn control arms isn’t advisable. While the vehicle may still be drivable, performance will undoubtedly be affected adversely. A: Control arm bushings are relatively easy to inspect. Look beneath the vehicle for signs of wear, such as ovalized bushings. To verify the condition, lift the vehicle off the ground using a jack and jack stands, grab the tire firmly, and try to move it up and down, left and right, and in and out. Check for notable play in bushings, which indicates excessive wear.
A: If you’re replacing control arm bushings on your own vehicle, expect to spend at least a day wrenching. Especially if you live in a rust-prone area or have an older vehicle, expect rusty fasteners and seized hardware, which can add substantial time to the repair.
Plan to replace the same components on both sides of your vehicle for preventative maintenance. Additionally, an alignment is required after suspension work to prevent accelerated tire wear and poor drivability.
