Real Answers Q&A With Daniel Cadena, Sr. Industrial Designer: The Traxio Nerf Bar Lineup

At RealTruck, we’re always looking to separate the "style bars" from the accessories that actually perform in the real world. That’s exactly what the engineering team set out to do with RealTruck's all-new Traxio™ 3”, 4”, and 5” nerf bar family—focusing on adjustability, all-weather traction, and long-term durability.   

For this month’s Real Answers feature, we connected with our Sr. Industrial Designer, Daniel Cadena, to get the full breakdown on what makes this new product line special. Read on for the full interview.

FRANK BISCIOTTI (FB): The nerf bar market is incredibly crowded, and frankly, a lot of products are just "style bars" that don't offer much else. What was the driving force behind the Traxio project, and how does it separate itself from the pack?  

DANIEL CADENA (DC): Style was definitely a driving force behind Traxio, especially as we worked to establish and implement our new Visible Brand Language [the visual elements that help define our brand]. But we wanted to take it beyond just creating another good-looking style bar. We focused on adding meaningful functionality that gives customers more flexibility and a better experience. 

One of the key differentiators is our variable-height adjustment, which allows customers to position the step at a height that better fits their preferences and needs. We also developed a step pad that not only complements the overall design, but provides improved multidirectional traction through its multifaceted tread pattern. 

The goal was to create a product where the styling gets your attention, but the functionality gives customers a reason to choose Traxio over another style bar. 

FB: One of the most practical features here is the RightHeight™ Bracket System. Why was adjustable mounting such a high priority for this lineup?  

DC: We wanted to give customers the ability to position the step where it works best for them. Some customers prefer the step positioned high and tight to the vehicle for a more streamlined look, while others may want to drop it a couple of extra inches for easier access and a more comfortable stepping position. 

Everyone has different preferences and needs, so giving customers that flexibility was an important part of the Traxio design.  

FB: We see a lot of generic grip tape out there, but you’ve gone with a purpose-built, multi-directional texture. Walk me through the engineering on the debris pass-through—why does that matter for the real-world user?  

DC: The tread pattern is one of my favorite elements of this side step. The multidirectional keystones, angled facets, raised texture patterns, and water channels work together to provide better traction from multiple directions while also creating paths for water, dirt, and debris to pass through instead of building up on the stepping surface.  

From a design standpoint, the subtle changes in pitch also catch the light differently, creating a really interesting reflection that gives the step pad a distinctive, premium appearance.   

FB: You’ve brought in this new keystone shape for the 4” and 5” bars. How does that design choice change the game for customers balancing that modern aesthetic against actual stepping function?  

DC: First, my hat goes off to the engineering team for pulling this off. The diagonal cut and end cap were not easy to execute well. 

What I really like about the keystone shape is that it gives us a more modern, intentional look without compromising what the step needs to do as a functional product. The angled geometry creates a wider visual stance while giving the tread pattern more opportunities to work with the direction of the foot. So even though the shape feels very design-driven, the stepping surface is still doing the heavy lifting when it comes to traction and stability. 

FB: Road debris is the enemy of any step bar. Can you talk about the design and function behind these molded end caps and the powder-coated finish—how do these hold up against the elements?  

DC: Road debris is definitely something we had to consider, especially on a product that sits right in the path of whatever the tires are throwing at it. 

The molded end caps are designed to give the ends of the bar a clean, finished appearance while also helping protect those areas from direct exposure to the elements. They also eliminate some of the sharp, exposed edges you would have with a more basic extrusion treatment. 

The powder-coated finish gives the aluminum another layer of protection against the everyday abuse a side step sees—water, dirt, salt, road grime and debris. But beyond durability, we wanted the finish to support the overall design. 

FB: You're rated for 600 lbs. per side. How do you engineer that kind of heavy-duty strength without making the step look bulky or industrial on the side of the truck?  

DC: The strength really comes from the unique shape of the profile. The trapezoidal geometry helps distribute the load across the extrusion and resist collapse, allowing us to achieve that 600-pound-per-side rating without having to make the step look overly thick or bulky. 

And, of course, we have the test results to back that claim up. That was an important part of the development process—making sure the design wasn't just visually clean, but that the structure could deliver the strength customers expect from a heavy-duty step.

FB: DIYers are the backbone of our community. How did you handle the mounting process to ensure this is a true "bolt-on" experience that doesn't eat up the customer's entire weekend?  

DC: The two-piece mounting bracket really helps simplify the installation process. Instead of trying to manage the entire step and bracket assembly at once, you can first secure the upper bracket to the vehicle and attach the lower bracket to the step. Then, you simply bring the two pieces together and connect them with the provided hardware. 

That separation makes the step much easier to handle during installation and really speeds up the process. The goal was to keep it a true bolt-on experience—something a DIYer can install in their driveway without turning it into an all-weekend project.  

FB: You’ve released 3”, 4”, and 5” options. How should a customer decide which width is right for them?  

DC : It really comes down to the look and stepping experience you're after. If you're looking for a more traditional round-tube nerf bar, the 3-inch option is a great fit. If you want something with a more stylized, contemporary look, the 4- and 5-inch options give you a stronger visual presence. 

The 5-inch also gives you the largest stepping surface, so if having a little more room under your foot is a priority, that's the way to go. Ultimately, all three give the customer the flexibility to choose the look and level of stepping surface that best fits their truck and their needs.  

FB: At the end of the day, we’re doing this for the folks out there actually using their trucks. Since the rollout started, what’s the one piece of customer feedback that’s really put a smile on your face and made you feel like all those hours of engineering were worth it?   

DC: One piece of feedback that has really stuck with me is hearing these described as having “high design value at a low price.” That’s exactly what we set out to achieve. 

We really wanted to provide a premium-looking step without the premium price tag. A lot of thought went into every square inch of these boards—from the overall shape and proportions to the tread pattern, details, and finishes. We wanted to make sure we weren’t just building a functional step, but designing something that exceeded the customer’s expectations for both looks and performance. 

So, hearing customers recognize that value is really rewarding. It makes all those hours of design feel worth it when you know you’ve delivered a product that looks and feels more premium than its price would suggest.
