Real Answers Q&A: Unlocking True Versatility with the Husky Liners Freedom Bed Liner

To help ring in Husky Liners' new release, the RealSource™ team sat down with Industrial Designer Josh Lu to discuss how custom-engineered interlocking technology, custom-molded ProGard™ material, and integrated cargo management came together to build a zero-compromise bed liner. Frank Bisciotti (FB): The truck bed liner market is flooded with drop-ins and spray-ins. What was the driving inspiration behind developing the Freedom Bed Liner?

Josh Lu (JL): The Freedom Bed Liner was designed to deliver a better overall experience than drop-in and spray-in liners by combining a secure, vehicle-specific fit with true ease of installation. Our five-piece system locks together tightly, outperforming drop-ins on cleaning while offering a precise, custom fit to your specific vehicle make and model. At the same time, each piece is engineered to lift out easily, so you get a simple installation and removal experience when it’s time to clean out or trade in your truck. All in all, this product was developed to maximize the enjoyment and usability of our customers’ trucks while protecting long-term value.​

FB: "Locks in tight, lifts out easy" is the core tagline here. How does the custom-engineered interlocking technology work in practice?​

JL: “Locks in tight” refers to the custom-engineered interlocking technology that creates a secure, protective barrier once installed. Heavy-duty side panels lock tightly into a durable ProGard™ bed floor, while locating flanges on the floor and slip joints on the bulkhead ensure a precise fit that helps lock out water and dust. “Lifts out easy” reflects the modular, five-piece design—each section can be removed one at a time, making cleanup or a lease return simple and stress-free. With no permanent coating, you don’t risk your trade-in value, and the bed goes back to stock condition after uninstallation.

FB: You chose ProGard™ material for the bed floor—a compound familiar to fans of Weatherbeater® floor liners. Why was this material right for a bed liner?​

JL: ProGard™ material was chosen not only for its proven durability and resistance to weather and UV exposure, but also because it delivers a tough, wear-resistant surface that protects your gear while providing grip. That grippy surface helps keep cargo from sliding around in the bed—a major pain point for our customers—so items stay put and remain easy to access at the tailgate. It also cleans up fast, whether you’re loading up or removing the liner.​

FB: Traditional drop-in liners are notorious for trapping water underneath and rusting out beds. How does the Freedom Bed Liner prevent that issue?​

JL: The Freedom Bed Liner is designed to lock out the elements and promote long-term bed health. Its modular construction makes it easy to lift out individual panels, so you can clean beneath them rather than trapping moisture. Integrated drainage paths channel water out of the bed, preventing buildup and reducing the risk of rust or long-term damage—something you don’t get with poorly draining one-piece liners.​

FB: Lease returns and trade-in values are a huge deal for modern truck buyers. How does this system protect a vehicle's resale value?​

JL: Protecting resale value was a key design goal. Unlike spray-in liners, which are permanent and can be expensive to remove, the Freedom Bed Liner is non-permanent and easy to remove. Each of the five pieces lifts out easily, allowing you to uninstall the system without damaging the bed. That means no impact on the condition of your truck when it’s time to trade in or return your lease.

FB: We noticed unique sidewall geometry molded right above the wheel wells. What functional advantage does this design offer?​

JL: I'm glad you noticed that. These are “shelves” that allow you to use 2x4s as dividers across the bed. The shelves can be found both above the wheel wells and closer to the tailgate. I personally like to place a 2x4 vertically to create a cargo zone that prevents items from sliding out of reach. I love this feature because it’s subtle but provides useful functionality without any extra parts.​

FB: How does the fitment accommodate standard truck bed features like tie-downs or utility rails?​

JL: The Freedom Liner includes notched cut lines for key OEM features like factory tie-downs and lights, so users can remove sections as needed. That way, you get a tight, custom fit while still being able to access standard truck bed features.

FB: From a pure design and engineering perspective, what’s your favorite detail on this product, and what’s one pro-tip you’d give someone installing their Freedom Bed Liner for the first time?  

JL: My favorite design detail on this product is the integrated 2x4 divider shelf system. Our engineers put a lot of excellent work into the design to ensure the base product has great fitment and performance, and this simple yet effective detail is just the cherry on top. If this is your first time installing a Freedom Bed Liner, I’d recommend following the installation order shown in the iSheets or the instruction booklet. This will help ensure you achieve the protective seal with as little fuss as possible.​
