2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Review

The midsize SUV segment is a crowded one, with essentially every manufacturer having at least one model on the market. Mazda is no exception, and with the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, they’ve got a serious competitor on their hands. During our weeklong review, it’s evident that not only does this SUV offer a dynamic driving experience, it offers the creature comforts one might want from this kind of vehicle.

Features

The CX-50 Hybrid is generously equipped, even in its base trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, allowing for effortless smartphone integration. Higher trims offer luxurious additions like leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system that delivers an immersive audio experience. The digital instrument cluster provides clear, customizable information, while the available head-up display keeps essential data in your line of sight.

One of the standout features is the hybrid powertrain itself. Combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with three electric motors, it produces a total of 219 horsepower. This setup, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), promises improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing too much performance.

Safety

Mazda has always prioritized safety, and the CX-50 Hybrid is no exception. The comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision mitigation. During our time with the vehicle, we found these systems to work seamlessly, providing an added layer of confidence on the road.

The vehicle's structural integrity is equally impressive. While we didn't personally crash-test the CX-50 Hybrid, its non-hybrid sibling has received top safety ratings, including the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. This speaks volumes about the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in the event of a collision.

Driving Experience

Here's where things get a bit complicated. The CX-50 Hybrid maintains Mazda's reputation for excellent handling and ride quality. The suspension strikes a perfect balance between comfort and sportiness, soaking up road imperfections while still providing responsive cornering. The steering is precise and well-weighted, giving the driver a great sense of control.

However, the hybrid powertrain introduces some compromises. While the fuel efficiency is impressive - some of the eagerness presented by the standard CX-50 just wasn’t there. Still, for daily driving, the steering felt precise.

For everyday driving and long highway stretches, the CX-50 Hybrid is a comfortable and efficient companion. The all-wheel-drive system provides sure-footed traction in various conditions, and the regenerative braking is well-tuned, offering a natural pedal feel.

While it may not deliver the same driving excitement as its non-hybrid sibling, it strikes a commendable balance between performance, comfort, and efficiency. For those prioritizing fuel economy without wanting to sacrifice too much in terms of driving dynamics and luxury, the CX-50 Hybrid is certainly worth a close look.

Practicality

The CX-50 Hybrid doesn't sacrifice much in terms of practicality compared to its gas-only counterpart. With 29.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row (expanding to 56.3 cubic feet with the seats folded), it offers ample room for luggage, groceries, or outdoor gear. The cabin provides comfortable seating for five, with decent legroom in both rows.

One drawback is the reduced towing capacity – 1,500 pounds compared to the non-hybrid's 3,500 pounds. This might be a consideration for those who frequently tow trailers or boats.

Wrap-Up

At the end of the day, the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid represents a solid offering for those in need of an SUV/crossover. Mazda continues to accelerate at offering practical vehicles that still speak to the driver. It’s certainly no Miata, but the brand has managed to bring sharp handling and power delivery to a family hauler. And at the end of the day, that’s not something every manufacturer has been able to do.
