Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels Explained

Updated on Mar 21, 2024

During its initial conception, the Jeep Wrangler’s predecessor, the CJ (Civilian Jeep), had amenities that were few and far between. The initial CJ-2A, which was essentially a repainted military MB, featured little more than two fixed-position buckets, a few analog gauges positioned into the sheet metal dash, and a simple three-spoke steering wheel.

Fast forward nearly eighty years, and the current-generation Jeep Wrangler is a far cry from its humble roots. Even the base model Sport feels luxurious by comparison, not to mention the massive infotainment displays, dual-zone climate control systems, and luxurious Nappa leather seats of high-spec trims.

If you’re in the market for a current-gen Wrangler JL, you’ll have to consider which trim level is right for you or, more specifically, which best suits your needs…and budget. In this guide, our experts provide a crash course on Jeep Wrangler trim levels, including what they are and what separates them from one another.

What Are Trim Levels?

So, what are trim levels anyway? This term describes the pre-packaged option groups selected by a vehicle’s manufacturer. You can essentially think of trim levels as a collection of features and accessories, where price increases proportionally alongside the feature count; in Layman’s terms, lower-spec’d trim levels have the lowest price tags and higher-spec’d trim levels have the highest.

Trim levels may impact several variables, including overall power and efficiency, drivetrain configuration, body configuration, off-road handling characteristics, interior luxury, and aesthetics.

Trim levels personalize a Jeep to a buyer’s needs and preferences. While some Jeep owners may prioritize off-road performance, others emphasize comfort and luxury. To satisfy both consumers, manufacturers develop trim levels offering various features and price points! Your Jeep Wrangler JL is no exception, offered in eight trim levels for the current model year, including:

  • Sport

  • Sport S

  • Willys

  • Sahara

  • High Altitude

  • Rubicon

  • Rubicon X

  • Rubicon 392

Which Package is Right for You?

So, which package is right for you? The short answer is whichever best meets your needs, desired features, and budget. Let’s dive a bit deeper into each factor.

First, you’ll need to consider your budget. An entry-level Wrangler Sport comes in at a base price of just under $34,000; while not chump-change by any stretch of the imagination, that’s a far more appealing price than the nearly $90,000 Rubicon 392! Having a general budget helps to narrow down which trim levels you can comfortably afford. At that point, it’s simply a matter of selecting the features that best meet your needs.

Speaking of features, which are most important to you? If you’re planning to use your Jeep primarily for street driving, you likely aren’t concerned with heavy-duty axles, locking differentials, and sizable lifts; instead, you’ll gravitate toward convenience and comfort features, like what’s offered on the Sahara and High Altitude. However, if off-road capabilities are a significant concern, check out any of the Rubicon trims or the Willys for excellent off-road performance at a value!
