What Is a Snatch Block Pulley Used For?

If you’ve hung around in off-road circles for some time, you’ve likely heard the term ‘snatch block’ or ‘snatch block pulley,’ but what exactly is this component? A snatch block is a popular tool used in off-road recovery, comprising a simple pulley and an eyelet bracket. This product serves two primary purposes; both centered around winching and pulling.

First, you can use a snatch block to redirect a winch line or recovery rope around an obstacle; this is especially useful when you or another wheeler are stuck in an inconvenient location without a straight shot to a sturdy anchor. In these scenarios, you can employ a snatch block to redirect the winch line without rubbing against another object, increasing friction, or pulling your vehicle sideways.

Alternatively, you can use a snatch block to give your winch a mechanical advantage. For example, the snatch block can be tied to a sturdy recovery point for leverage. Then, the winch line is routed through the snatch block and back to a stable recovery point on your vehicle. As a result, the winch pulls against your vehicle rather than the recovery point, essentially doubling your winch's effectiveness!

Different Snatch Block Pulley Types

Snatch blocks come in several shapes and sizes; three of the most common include:

  • Snatch Block with Hook: Snatch blocks with hook ends, like the Superwinch Pulley Block with Hook 8000 LB, make securing your snatch block to a stationary object quick and easy. These snatch blocks are ideal for solo recovery purposes where there’s a straight shot to a tree or other anchor point.

  • Snatch Block with Shackle: Snatch blocks with shackle ends, like the Smittybilt Snatch Block, are used for similar purposes as snatch blocks with hooks; however, they feature a closed eyelet to tie the snatch block to an anchor rather than an easy-to-use hook.

  • Swing Away Snatch Pulley: Swing away snatch pulleys, like the Superwinch Snatch Block 36000 LB, feature a single pulley with two rotating eyelets for easy and efficient mounting.

Snatch Block Pulley FAQs

Q: How does a snatch block work?

A: Snatch blocks allow your recovery rope or winch line to ride along the integrated pulley and either secure to another anchor point in another direction without binding or loop back to your vehicle to double recovery strength.

Q: What is mechanical advantage?

A: Mechanical advantage refers to the ratio of force a machine produces vs. the force it’s provided; in the case of a snatch block, it refers to the snatch block’s ability to double the output of a winch!

Q: How do I choose the right snatch block for my application?

A: When shopping for a snatch block, consider factors like your vehicle’s weight, the maximum angle of the pull, and the required mechanical advantage.
