Every state has its share of standout features—from differing landscapes to unique cultures, foods, and people. However, one of the first things you may notice when approaching or entering another state isn't any of these things—it’s its license plates.
Such is the inspiration behind RealTruck's License Plate Roundup—a series dedicated to exploring the most interesting specialty and standard license plates available across the United States. Each installment covers one state's standout plate designs, the organizations and causes they support, and exactly where the registration fees go when you choose one. Along the way, we cover a bit of the state's history, identity, and the things worth knowing.
This month we're covering Virginia—a state defined by its pivotal role in early American history, natural beauty, and its deep military roots. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Hampton Roads coast, Virginia is a state with a lot to show—and its specialty license plate program reflects that breadth, with more than 200 distinct designs spanning conservation, history, education, and beyond.
Virginia's story stretches further back than most. Before diving into the license plates that reflect the state's character, it helps to understand the history and identity behind them—because in Virginia, those things go deep.
Virginia's origins predate American statehood by nearly two centuries. The colony began with the Virginia Company of London receiving its royal charter from King James I on April 10, 1606, and the first permanent English settlers arrived to establish Jamestown on May 14, 1607—making it the oldest permanent English settlement in North America.
Following the Declaration of Independence, Virginia officially joined the United States as the 10th to ratify the Constitution.
Virginia holds a unique place in American identity—as the birthplace of the nation's founding, a major military hub, and one of the most geographically diverse states on the East Coast.
Virginia's historical footprint is unmatched among the 50 states. Jamestown marks the site of the first permanent English settlement in North America. Colonial Williamsburg preserves 18th-century American life as a living-history museum. The state is also home to the historic estates of two of the country's most celebrated founders—George Washington's Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.
The Blue Ridge Mountains define Virginia's western horizon, while Shenandoah National Park offers one of the most scenic drives in the country along the winding Skyline Drive. To the east, the Chesapeake Bay—one of North America's most productive estuaries—supports the blue crabs and oysters that have long defined the state's coastal culinary culture.
Virginia hosts two of the most significant military and defense installations in the world—Norfolk Naval Station, the largest naval base on the planet, located in the Hampton Roads region, and the Pentagon, headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, just across the Potomac from Washington, D.C.
Virginia peanuts—larger and more flavorful than most commercial varieties—have been a state staple for generations. Country ham, deeply aged and salt-cured, is another cornerstone of Virginia's Southern culinary tradition. And no Virginia food conversation is complete without acknowledging the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab—a regional institution in its own right.
Virginia carries three distinct nicknames, each rooted in a different chapter of the state's history:
The Old Dominion: Given by King Charles II in recognition of the colony's loyalty to the English Crown during the English Civil War, making it Virginia's oldest nickname and the one most commonly used today.
The Mother of Presidents: Virginia is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson—more than any other state.
The Mother of States: A reference to Virginia's original territorial expanse, from which several other states—including Kentucky and West Virginia—were eventually carved.
Virginia offers one of the most extensive specialty plate programs in the country, with more than 200 distinct designs available through the Virginia DMV. Plates span military and veteran designations, university affiliations, wildlife and conservation causes, state landmarks, and civic organizations—giving drivers a wide range of options to express identity and support causes they care about. Many of Virginia's specialty plates operate as revenue-sharing programs—after the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, a portion of each annual fee is transferred directly to the designated organization.
The following are ten of RealTruck's favorites, selected for design, cause, or the story behind them. All fee information is sourced directly from the Virginia DMV's official specialty plate program.
The 250th American Revolution Anniversary plate commemorates the seminal events of 1775–1783 that gave birth to the United States—and Virginia was at the center of much of it. Of the $25 annual fee, $15 is transferred to the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission to support its programs and commemorative initiatives across the state.
We chose this plate because Virginia's role in the American Revolution is without parallel. From Patrick Henry's call to arms to the pivotal Battle of Yorktown fought on Virginia soil, the state's contribution to American independence deserves recognition—and this plate is a fitting way to carry that legacy down the road.
Virginia's black antique vehicle plate is one of the most historically grounded designs in the state's catalog—a clean, high-contrast design that evokes early American automotive history. The one-time fee structure makes it an especially attractive option for classic vehicle owners who want a plate that matches their ride's era without ongoing annual costs.
We chose this plate for its timeless aesthetic. Black-and-white plates have a historical authenticity that no modern design can fully replicate, and on the right vehicle, this plate is as much a part of the presentation as the chrome or the paint.
The yellow antique plate complements the black antique design—a bold, embossed blue-on-yellow format that mirrors the look of vintage Virginia plates from earlier decades. Like the black antique option, it carries a one-time fee structure and is restricted to qualifying antique vehicles.
For collectors and restorers who want their classics to wear historically accurate colors, the yellow antique plate adds a layer of authenticity that's hard to replicate with a standard modern plate design.
The Appalachian Trail stretches over 500 miles through Virginia—more than any other state along the 2,200-mile route from Georgia to Maine. The Appalachian Trail plate directly supports that stretch. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to support its operations and programs in Virginia.
We chose this plate for its connection to one of America's most iconic outdoor experiences. The AT runs through some of Virginia's most stunning terrain—the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge highlands, and the remote corners of Southwest Virginia—and this plate puts money directly toward protecting that corridor for future hikers.
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation plate is a visual standout—one of the most striking designs in the Virginia catalog—featuring the mountain scenery that makes the Parkway one of the most visited destinations in the National Park System. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to support its operations and programs in Virginia.
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, this plate is a winner. The mountain imagery is evocative and regionally authentic, and the cause it supports—preserving one of America's great scenic drives—is one we're proud to put on a bumper.
Ducks Unlimited has a strong presence in Virginia, particularly in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and the Eastern Shore wetlands—some of the most important waterfowl habitats on the Atlantic Flyway. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred to Ducks Unlimited, Inc., to support its wetlands and waterfowl habitat protection programs in Virginia.
We never overlook a state's Ducks Unlimited plate, and Virginia's is no exception. With a mission to restore and protect critical wetland habitat, Ducks Unlimited is fighting the good fight for wildlife and waterfowl across the country—and this plate puts Virginia drivers directly in that effort.
Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the Blue Ridge Parkway—one of Virginia's most iconic natural features. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred directly to the organization.
We included this plate as a companion to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation plate above—both support the preservation of the same irreplaceable landscape, and the Friends organization specifically focuses on volunteer-driven stewardship of the Parkway's trail system and natural areas. For drivers who spend time on the Parkway, this plate is an easy way to give back to the resource you're enjoying.
Virginia's Move Over plate raises awareness of Virginia's Move Over law—a safety requirement that mandates drivers slow down and change lanes when approaching stopped emergency vehicles, law enforcement, or roadside workers. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred to the Fredericks Family Fund Foundation to support its operations and programs in Virginia.
We chose this plate because road safety is something we take seriously at RealTruck. Emergency responders and roadside workers put themselves at risk every day—and a plate that promotes awareness of the law protecting them is worth putting on the road.
Shenandoah National Park encompasses over 200,000 acres of the Blue Ridge Mountains, drawing millions of visitors annually to Skyline Drive and its network of more than 500 miles of hiking trails. After the first 1,000 qualifying plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee is transferred to the Shenandoah National Park Trust to support its activities and programs in Virginia.
For any Virginia driver who's spent a morning on Skyline Drive or hiked to an overlook in the Shenandoah Valley, this plate is a natural fit. The Trust it supports directly funds conservation, education, and preservation work in one of the most visited national parks in the country—and the plate design captures why people keep coming back.
At $10 annually, the United We Stand plate is one of the most affordable specialty options in Virginia's catalog—and one of the most broadly resonant. The design speaks to American unity and civic pride, and the low price point makes it accessible to any driver who wants to carry that message without a significant annual fee.
We included this plate because its message is simple, direct, and timeless. Virginia—the Old Dominion, the Mother of Presidents, a state that has been at the center of American history from its very beginning—is as fitting a home for this plate as any state in the union.
Once you've selected your Virginia plate, RealTruck has the hardware to display it right. License plate frames, relocation brackets, and illuminated mounting hardware are all available to complete the look and keep your registration visible in any configuration.
For off-road builds, lifted trucks, or Canyon and Tacoma owners with aftermarket front bumpers, a license plate relocation bracket keeps your registration compliant without drilling into the bumper itself. A HAVOC® Offroad tag relocation bracket or a Rugged Ridge® license plate relocation bracket mounts cleanly to the bumper and positions the plate where it can be seen.
And for year-round visibility after dark, Rugged Ridge® LED license plate bolts swap in quickly for a clean, finished look that keeps the plate illuminated without any wiring complexity.
