This month, License Plate Roundup heads to the American Northeast—the historic Bay State of Massachusetts. We'll cover some history, notable facts, and the state's most memorable license plate designs.

Massachusetts was admitted to the Union on February 6, 1788, becoming the sixth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. On the academic front, Massachusetts hosts one of the most alluring collections of prestigious universities in the world—Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Tufts, and Boston College. All are located within the greater Boston area, making it a global hub for research, medicine, and technology.​

Beyond history and academia, Massachusetts is defined by its sports culture, coastal identity, and food. The Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins all have passionate followings and combined for a remarkable championship run in the 2000s and 2010s. Clam chowder, lobster rolls, and Dunkin' Donuts—founded in Quincy—are nationwide staples that also got their start in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is nicknamed "The Bay State"—a reference to Cape Cod Bay and Massachusetts Bay, the large coastal bays that shaped the state's early economy. The original Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded in 1630, took its name directly from the bay, and the association has stuck ever since.

The Firefighters Memorial plate depicts a firefighter against a red cross backdrop, with "Firefighters Memorial" along the bottom. Proceeds benefit the Firefighters Memorial Fund. The special plate fee is $40—$12 covers manufacturing, and $28 goes to the fund at issuance, with the full amount going to the organization on renewal.

The Fish and Wildlife plate features a trout and directs proceeds to the Environmental Trust Fund, which supports conservation education and environmental preservation across Massachusetts. The special plate fee is $40, with $28 going to the fund at issuance and the full amount on renewal.

A timely addition to the Massachusetts plate lineup, the 250 Years of Independence plate is rendered in blue and features the year 1776 surrounded by 13 stars, with "250 Years of Independence" along the bottom. The $40 special plate fee goes directly to the general fund—both at issuance and renewal.

Patriots plates feature the team's flying Elvis logo and are available in versions noting Super Bowl, 5X Champions, or 6X Champions designations. Proceeds benefit the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. The special plate fee is $40—$12 covers manufacturing, and $28 goes to the foundation at issuance, with the full fee going to the organization on renewal.

The Striped Bass plate features several striped bass with "Striped Bass Conservation" along the bottom. Like the Fish and Wildlife plate, proceeds benefit the Environmental Trust Fund for conservation education and preservation. The $40 special plate fee splits $12 for manufacturing and $28 to the fund at issuance, with the full renewal fee going to the organization.

The UMass plate features the Minuteman logo with the tagline "You were. You are. UMass." in red text along the bottom. Proceeds benefit the UMass Alumni Association, Inc. The $40 special plate fee breaks down to $12 for manufacturing and $28 to the alumni association at issuance, with the full renewal fee going to the organization.
