Toyota TRD Sport Vs. TRD Off-Road Vs. TRD Pro

Updated on Apr 17, 2025

Few names are as recognizable as Toyota's TRD in the realm of factory tuning, in which manufacturers develop special-edition vehicles and trim packages alongside their in-house tuning divisions. The TRD line of trims delivers superior performance and styling at a premium price. These special-edition models span Toyota's entire lineup, including the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, and even the Camry.

Though Toyota initially produced only one TRD iteration per model, it now offers three or more on several of the manufacturer's flagship platforms, including the popular 4Runner and Tacoma. Three such trims, which carry across both models, include the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

In this RealSource feature, we're directly comparing these three trims across both models, contrasting features, base pricing, and more. If you're in the market for a new TRD 4Runner of Tacoma but aren't sure which trim level to splurge for, read on for RealTruck's overview of the TRD Sport vs. TRD Off-Road vs. TRD Pro.

What Does TRD Stand For?

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development—a subdivision of Toyota that operates as the brand's in-house, factory-backed tuning and racing division. TRD focuses on performance parts, accessories, and special-edition versions of existing Toyota chassis, fine-tuning off-the-shelf models into performance-oriented rides.

TRD isn't a one-trick pony that builds strictly street-scorchers or off-roaders. Instead, the division's engineers emphasize overall performance. On the street or in the dirt, TRD ensures that Toyota offers peak-performing vehicles that appeal to die-hard enthusiasts.

Understanding TRD Trims: TRD Sport vs. TRD Off-Road vs. TRD Pro

Whereas Toyota originally reserved one trim level per platform for TRD's modifications, such isn't the case in 2025. The 4Runner and Tacoma have been blessed with several unique TRD trims, including the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. This section covers the differences between each TRD trim.

TRD Sport

The TRD Sport is a trim that emphasizes on-road performance. It features upgrades such as sporty body-colored trim, sport-tuned suspension, and minor underhood upgrades. TRD Sport models are available in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations.

Tacoma TRD Sport

The 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport comes in at a base price of $39,400.

This on-road, sport-tuned truck comes with several features not found on lower-level trims, including:

  • i-FORCE 2.4L turbocharged engine

  • Eight-speed automatic transmission

  • TRD sport-tuned suspension

  • Color-keyed exterior accents

  • 18-inch TRD Sport alloy wheels

  • LED fog lamps

  • LED bed lighting

4Runner TRD Sport

The 2025 4Runner TRD Sport comes in at a base price of $47,250.

Feature-wise, this trim closely mirrors that of the Tacoma. Standard equipment includes:

  • i-FORCE 2.4L turbocharged engine

  • Eight-speed automatic transmission

  • TRD sport-tuned suspension

  • 20-inch machine-finished TRD alloy wheels

  • TRD honeycomb mesh grille

  • Color-keyed exterior accents

  • LED fog lamps

TRD Off-Road

The TRD Off-Road trim takes several of the great features of the TRD Sport, including the aggressive exterior with body-colored accents and mild performance upgrades, but steers the trim in an off-road-centric direction. Upgrades like locking differentials and skid plates make the TRD Off-Road a far better performer in the dirt.

Tacoma TRD Off-Road

The 2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road comes in at a base price of $41,800.

This trim builds up the groundwork laid by the TRD Sport but adds several features to increase off-road performance. Unique standard equipment includes:

  • Standard four-wheel drive

  • Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers

  • 17-inch TRD Off-Road wheels and all-terrain tires

  • Fuel tank, transfer case, and engine skid plates

  • Electric-locking rear differential

4Runner TRD Off-Road

The 2025 4Runner TRD Off-Road comes in at a base price of $49,190.

Like the previous trim, the 4Runner TRD Off-Road closely mirrors the Tacoma variant's standard equipment with a few additional features. Standard equipment of the 4Runner TRD Off-Road includes:

  • Standard four-wheel drive

  • Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers

  • 18-inch TRD Off-Road wheels and all-terrain tires

  • Fuel tank, transfer case, and engine skid plates

  • Electric-locking rear differential

  • Standard Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system with Crawl Control

TRD Pro

The TRD Pro is one of Toyota's top-tier trims for the Tacoma and 4Runner, second only to the newly introduced Trailhunter. It's a trim engineered exclusively for off-road dominance, featuring premium FOX dampers, heavy-duty skid plates, an upgraded interior, and various other features that build upon the already capable TRD Off-Road. The TRD Pro is offered exclusively as a four-wheel-drive, further solidifying its design as an off-road-specific trim.

Tacoma TRD Pro

The 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro comes in at a base price of $63,735.

The TRD Pro is the Tacoma's top-of-the-line trim, slotted just above the Trailhunter regarding price. This model drastically improves upon the groundwork laid by previous TRD trims, including such standard features as:

  • Standard i-FORCE MAX 2.4L hybrid powertrain

  • FOX 2.5-inch QS3 adjustable internal bypass shocks with remote reservoirs

  • FOX IFP rear bump stops

  • Front swaybar disconnect

  • IsoDynamic front seats

  • 18-inch TRD wheels and 33-inch all-terrain tires

  • Electronic locking rear differential

  • Aluminum front skid plate

  • High-clearance bumpers

  • Rigid Industries LED fog lights

  • TRD-tuned catback exhaust system

  • Factory suspension lift (1.5 inches in the front and 0.5 inch at the rear)

  • Specialized forged upper control arms for proper ball joint angle

4Runner TRD Pro

The 2025 4Runner TRD Pro comes in at a base price of $66,900.

At this price, the TRD Pro 4Runner falls just below the Trailhunter trim, making it the second priciest in the 4Runner lineup. This trim backs several of the same standard features of its Tacoma sibling, including:

  • Standard i-FORCE MAX 2.4L hybrid powertrain

  • FOX 2.5-inch QS3 adjustable shocks with piggyback reservoirs

  • 18-inch TRD wheels and 33-inch all-terrain tires

  • High-strength steel skid plates

  • Front swaybar disconnect

  • Multi-Terrain Select driving modes

  • Electronic locking rear differential

  • TRD-tuned catback exhaust system

  • Heritage grille with a built-in Rigid Industries lightbar (active with high beams)

  • 1.5-inch widened overfenders

  • High-clearance bumpers

  • Aluminum front skid plate

  • TRD performance air intake

  • Rigid Industries LED fog lights

Other TRD Trims

Believe it or not, these aren't the only TRD trims Toyota offers for the Tacoma and 4Runner. Notable others include the TRD Prerunner on the Tacoma, the TRD Sport Premium and Off-Road Premium on the 4Runner, and the TRD i-FORCE MAX editions, which offer the same standard equipment with the addition of the hybrid powertrain. Evidently, TRD stays busy.
