Sibling Rivalry: Ford Bronco vs. Bronco Sport

Updated on Jan 17, 2025

Every good family has at least one sibling rivalry—think Bart and Lisa of The Simpsons or Malcolm and Reese of Malcolm in the Middle. Though the rivalries above may be some of the most iconic, they aren't the only two that come to mind. One of the most recent yet polarizing sibling rivalries began at Ford's Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan.

In 2020 and 2021, Ford unveiled two new SUVs joining its lineup—the much-anticipated Bronco and its little sibling, the Bronco Sport. Though the two models share the same namesake, they're drastically different in design and concept—which is superior?

In this RealSource feature, we compare both SUVs and conclude, once and for all, which is the top Bronco. Stay tuned for RealTruck's overview of the Ford Bronco versus the Bronco Sport.

History and Overview

Before we get into the nitty gritty comparisons and specification showdowns, let's take a trip back to the start of each model. In this section, we're covering each platform's humble beginnings and key characteristics.

Ford Bronco

In 1966, Ford debuted the Bronco as a competitor to compact, four-wheel-drive vehicles like the Jeep® and International Scout. With features and specifications similar to those of the Jeep® CJ-5 and the iconic Ford blue oval badge, the Bronco became an instant success in the U.S. market.

Surviving multiple generations of revision, the Bronco was finally discontinued in 1996. By then, the model shared several characteristics with the ninth-generation F-150, including all body panels from the doors forward, the drivetrain, suspension, and interior.

Fast-forward to 2021, when Ford reintroduced the Bronco to compete with the otherwise unchallenged Jeep Wrangler, which has monopolized the off-road-centric SUV market for nearly three decades. Once again, the model was released as a hearty, body-on-frame SUV with several qualities shared with a pickup in Ford's lineup. However, unlike previous generations, the new Bronco wasn't based on the F-150. Instead, Ford returned the Bronco to its roots, opting for size and styling that closely matched the original release.

The new model shares much in common with the Ford Ranger, including a similar chassis and Ecoboost powertrain. While the sixth-generation Bronco has yet to match the Jeep Wrangler's sales figures, the gap between the two seems to narrow each quarter.

Ford Bronco Sport

We'll never entirely understand why Ford didn't name the Bronco Sport the Bronco II. Upon its release in 2020 for the 2021 model year, the Bronco Sport immediately evoked memories of the Ranger-based, compact Bronco II manufactured from 1984–1990.

However, the Bronco Sport shares little in common with the Bronco II besides its overall concept as a miniature Bronco. Rather than being based on the Ranger, like the Bronco or Bronco II, the Bronco Sport shares its chassis with the Ford Escape crossover.

Like the Escape, the Bronco Sport features unibody construction, independent front and rear suspension, and small-displacement engine options. While it may look rugged on the outside, it's little more than a standard crossover beneath the sheet metal—which isn't necessarily bad.

The Bronco Sport is mild-mannered on the street yet offers rugged offroad performance. Its small profile allows it to navigate the narrowest city streets and tightest trails, making it the perfect rig for the urban city dweller with a knack for outdoor adventure.

Which Model is Right For You?

So, which of the two SUVs is better? Realistically, whichever best suits your needs. Neither model is better, but they're directed at different consumer bases.

For those seeking extreme off-road performance and the added room of a full-size SUV, the Bronco is likely the preferred choice. Beefy body-on-frame construction, a solid rear axle, and powerful engine configurations make the sixth-gen Bronco a powerhouse in the dirt.

Alternatively, the Bronco Sport falls more in line with the urban dweller. The compact, unibody chassis handles like a conventional crossover on the street. However, its various off-road packages provide plenty of grip to navigate mild trails and fire roads.

Characteristics aside, you'll also need to consider your budget. The Bronco Sport comes in at a base price of just $29,795, offering incredible value. Alternatively, the entry-level Bronco starts at $39,630, with fully loaded Bronco Raptors touching six figures.
