First introduced in 2018, the BAK Revolver X4 quickly became a standout in the tonneau cover market. Backed by an intuitive hard roll-up design, premium build quality, and RealTruck’s industry-leading customer support, the X4 was a staple of the automotive aftermarket.
However, all good things must come to an end. While RealTruck’s discontinuation of the Revolver X4 drew some initial backlash, the dissatisfaction was short-lived. In actuality, BAK® had been preparing for 2021’s release of the redesigned Revolver X4s, which addressed several of the shortcomings of the original tonneau cover, such as the felt backing and corrosion-susceptible raw aluminum components.
BAK and RealTruck once again released an alternate version of the X4s in 2024—the T-slot-compatible Revolver X4ts, which boasted several utility-focused upgrades. In any form, the X4 tonneau cover line is undoubtedly one of our most successful—but how does it stack up against our other tonneau cover offerings?
In this feature, we’re pinning the newest rendition of the Revolver X4—the X4ts—against its direct competition. Read on to learn more about what sets these tonneau covers apart so that you can decide for yourself which is right for your truck.
How did we come up with this list of challengers? For this comparison, we wanted to pin the Revolver X4ts against tonneau covers that the average consumer would likely also consider. That includes products that are also made by RealTruck and feature similar functionality, aesthetics, and price points. With these considerations in mind, we landed on four challengers—the BAKFlip® MX4 TS, RetraxONE XR, Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT, and TruXedo Pro X15 TS.
Comparing all five tonneau covers side-by-side can be complicated. To make things easier, we’ve created a table comparing key characteristics of each bed cover. Consult the chart below for a quick visualization of how the tonneau covers stack up against one another at a glance.
Before we get into the direct comparisons, let’s quickly clear up some confusion between the Revolver X4ts and X4s. Both bed covers are remarkably similar in build, design, and operation. However, they feature one significant difference—the presence of T-slot rails.
The X4ts feature integrated T-slot tracks in each side rail, enabling the quick and easy mounting of accessories, like cargo carriers and rack systems. Alternatively, the standard X4s does not, reducing its overall utility for outdoorspersons, campers, and overlanders.
First, let’s take a look at the two BAK-made tonneau covers—the Revolver X4ts and the BAKFlip MX4 TS. Both bed covers are built to last from premium materials, including aluminum base structures. However, most other features differ.
For instance, the Revolver X4ts is a hard roll-up bed cover, while the BAKFlip MX4 is a hard folding tonneau. Functionality-wise, both bed covers are easy to operate and offer full cargo access in the open position. They’re also highly secure in the closed position, featuring patented locking mechanisms that prevent unwanted bed access.
That said, each cover installs and operates differently. Whereas the Revolver X4s requires approximately an hour to install, the MX4 TS cuts install time in half to just under 30 minutes.
If pricing is a concern, the MX4 TS also comes out on top. Entry pricing of the MX4 TS starts at just $1,349.99—$200 less than the X4ts. The same 5-year warranty backs both bed covers.
Next, let’s take a look at the RetraxONE XR—an impressive retractable bed cover offering sleek aesthetics and practically effortless operation.
The RetraxONE XR is manufactured from durable, aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate. Its hard finish is easier to clean than the textured leather-grained vinyl covering the Revolver X4ts.
Though their design differs significantly, both tonneau covers are built well and engineered to last. While both feature covers that effectively roll up to the bulkhead, the X4ts offers a more conventional form factor. The RetraxONE XR, by comparison, rolls into a fixed canister at the bulkhead. While the RetraxONE XR’s design does better protect the bed cover while rolled up, it also cuts into your truck’s cargo area, reducing usable bed space by approximately eight inches.
Pricing is another area where the covers vary, as the RetraxONE XR comes in at approximately $200 more than the Revolver. However, you could view the extra cost as a worthwhile investment, as the RetraxONE XR does include a superior limited lifetime warranty.
Up next is another retractable bed cover—the Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT. This premium, retractable bed cover is sleek, stylish, and secure. Like the Revolver X4ts, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT features an aluminum slate construction with a marine-grade vinyl overlay for sleek styling and superior weather resistance. However, this is essentially where the similarities end.
Both covers operate differently, as the Revolver X4ts is a conventional roll-up bed cover, while the Roll-N-Lock is retractable. As with the RetraxONE XR, this design means that the Roll-N-Lock slightly reduces your truck’s usable cargo space to accommodate the canister. However, if you rarely haul oversized items in the bed, this likely won’t be an issue.
While secure, stylish, and easy to operate, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT does come at a higher cost. Base pricing of the M-Series XT comes in at $1,849.99—approximately $300 higher than the Revolver X4ts. Despite its higher price tag, the Roll-N-Lock includes only a three-year warranty—two years less than the X4ts.
Lastly, we have the least expensive truck bed cover on this list—the TruXedo Pro X15 TS. Don’t let the Pro X15 TS’s inexpensive price point fool you into thinking it’s any lower quality than other offerings on this list. While starting at just $699.99, this premium soft roll-up bed cover offers exceptional utility.
Integrated T-slot side rails make securing gear mounts, racks, and other carriers a breeze, while a weather-resistant woven canvas top provides exceptional cargo protection and sleek, matte black styling.
Installation and operation are both simple—however, it’s important to note that cargo security is significantly reduced when transitioning from a hard roll-up tonneau cover, like the BAK Revolver X4ts, to a soft roll-up bed cover, like the TruXedo X15 TS. While this bed cover is a theft deterrent, as it hides your valuables from view, motivated thieves can slice through the top in seconds with a sharp blade.
If cargo security is a serious concern, we’d recommend a more secure option, like a hard roll-up, hard folding, or retractable bed cover. However, those who don’t regularly transport valuables or leave them unattended won’t complain—especially when weighing the TruXedo’s inexpensive price point and impressive limited lifetime warranty.
When it comes to premium tonneau covers, the BAK Revolver X4ts easily holds its own—offering a refined hard roll-up design, excellent build quality, integrated T-slot utility, and a solid 5-year warranty. Compared to its top competitors, it strikes a strong balance of security, style, and function. However, your ideal choice ultimately depends on your priorities.
