How to Upgrade the Ford Maverick’s Bed

Updated on Nov 12, 2025

Ford’s entry-level pickup, the Maverick, has proven to be highly popular with consumers and commercial customers alike. Its small size, which combines pickup truck utility with small vehicle efficiency, makes the Maverick the perfect utility vehicle for those who value size and efficiency over outright capability.

Ford Maverick Bed Accessories: RetraxPro XR Tonneau Cover and BedRug Bed Liner

While Ford has developed a robust and functional platform, there are ways to improve its usefulness. For example, those customers who wish to use the pickup as more of a commuter, might value the additional locking trunk-like storage space that a tonneau cover provides. However, there may be times when it needs to be easily converted into a traditional pickup box for when an owner needs to carry taller items. For this use case, the RetraxPro Tonneau Cover is the perfect addition.

Why I Chose RetraxPro XR Tonneau Cover

Designed to be watertight and lockable, the RetraxPro Tonneau Cover easily slides out of the way, revealing a traditional open pickup box, but can just as quickly be rolled shut, creating a secure storage space. The RetraxPro tonneau is made from extruded aluminum rails and double-walled aluminum slats that have been powder coated in a matte black finish for durability and are capable of supporting 500 pounds of evenly distributed weight. The RealTruck RetraxPRO comes in two versions, the XR with Retrax’s T-slot Trax Rail system and the MX version with standard rails. Opting for the XR version allows for easily adding accessories, such as a bed rack or crossbars to further enhance functionality.

The aluminum slats stow in a compact bulkhead-mounted canister that uses maintenance-free sealed ball bearings. The lid slides on an innovative spiral track system that prevents scratches when stowed, as well as when opening and closing. Thanks to a flush profile, the bed is sealed against the elements and any water that makes it past the seal is routed into integrated drain tubes and out of the bed. The RetraxPro XR is proudly made in North Dakota and has a lifetime warranty against manufacturing and material defects.

While the RetraxPro XR Tonneau Cover solves the problem of adding lockable and weather-resistant storage, it doesn’t keep things in the bed from sliding around or damaging the bed surface. However, combining it with an exact-fit BedRug Classic bed liner is the perfect pairing.

Why I Chose BedRug Bed Liner

BedRug bed liners are made from a rugged polypropylene with a ¾-inch cushioned pad and provide a soft-touch carpet-like surface, similar to a trunk. However, unlike trunk carpet, BedRug’s material is both anti-skid and resistant to moisture, mildew, chemicals, stains, and UV. It is engineered to withstand being open to the elements in an open truck bed while acting like a lined trunk when paired with a tonneau cover.

BedRug bedliners are molded to the exact shape of a truck bed for a perfect fit, and can easily be cleaned with a hose or pressure washer. Like the RetraxPro XR Tonneau Cover, BedRug bed liners come with a limited lifetime warranty and are assembled in Tennessee.

With just a couple of hours and common tools, we transformed a 2025 Ford Maverick by installing these two complementary products. This bed system allows the owner to secure and protect items, but can also be easily converted when more space is needed for bulkier cargo that won't fit under the cover.

Installation Steps

Part 1: BedRug Installation Instructions

Step 1:

Our products for this install were quickly shipped and were well packaged.

Step 2:

We began the install by washing and drying the bed before verifying the contents of the BedRug kit. We then loosely placed the BedRug into the bed of the Maverick to check fitment and to get a feel for how the pieces would lay in the bed.

Step 3:

Next, we zipped the BedRug pieces together to form our new bed liner.

Step 4:

In order to expose our factory tie downs, we located the molded cutouts areas and matched them to the correct location in the bed.

Step 5:

We used a utility knife to cut slits in the BedRug, making an access point for the factory tie down cleats to poke through.

Step 6:

After cutting slits in the BedRug, we checked to make sure they were correctly sized and positioned to slide over the tie down cleats.

Step 7:

After pre-fitting our BedRug and making modifications for the tie downs, we removed it from the bed and started attaching the hook side of the and loop fasteners along the pre-sown-in loop sections, without removing the protective backing.

Step 8:

In preparation for the final installation, we continued this process on the underside of the BedRug.

Step 9:

With the hook-and-loop fasteners in place, we pulled the backing from the adhesive on the underside of the BedRug, before laying it down.

Step 10:

We continued the install by removing the protective backing from the hook-and loop on the bulkhead and side sections before positioning it and applying pressure.

Step 11:

Next, the tailgate gap section was installed along with the tailgate panel.

Step 12:

Lastly, we used our utility knife to trim the BedRug around the factory utility bins.

Step 13:

And just like that, we had our bed protected with a new BedRug bed liner, which fit our Maverick’s bed like a glove.

Part 2: RetraxPRO XR Installation Instructions

Step 14:

We then set our eyes on the RetraxPRO XR, which comes well packaged to avoid any damage during shipping.

Step 15:

To keep the canister secure during shipping it has two shipping tubes that need to be removed prior to installation.

Step 16:

Two white shipping tabs are also used to secure the canister during shipping and need to be removed. However, we kept one handy to use as a shim later in the install.

Step 17:

Next, we opened the lock and pulled the cover about 6-8 inches out of the canister, aligning the cover with side rails.

Step 18:

With the side rails in place and the cover sitting in the channels, we attached the rails with the supplied hardware.

Step 19:

Before lifting the assembly in place, we mounted the front cover to the canister and fastened it.

Step 20:

The entire assembly was then lifted into place above the bed of our Maverick, ensuring the front seal was lying flat on top of the bulkhead.

Step 21:

Reusing the plastic shipping bracket that we removed earlier as a shim, we positioned the canister and rail assembly to ensure we had a 1/8-in gap between the back of the rail and the tailgate.

Step 22:

Retrax provides four bedrail clamps with the Maverick kit. We positioned them according to the instructions, paying special attention to how the adjustable top jaw engaged the underside of the bedrail.

Step 23:

We then tightened the bedrail clamps while pushing the rail down while also tilting them up slightly to get the best engagement and fit. This step is easier with an extra set of hands.

Step 24:

Once the clamps were installed to our satisfaction, we then tightened the jam nuts according to the installation instructions.

Step 25:

After measuring the distance between the rails to ensure a consistent gap, no more adjustments were required and we removed the protective plastic from the canister.

Step 26:

Drain tubes are provided to route water out of the canister and from the bed. These snapped into place and are easily routed.

Step 27:

Our final step was to operate the RetraxPRO XR cover and check for any gaps, fitment, or operation issues. Here you can see it in the closed configuration, allowing the bed to act as a locking trunk.

Step 28:

With the bed fully open and exposed, the Maverick still offers pickup truck capability. As you can see here, the compact canister barely takes up any of the Maverick’s already precious bed space.

Step 29:

Despite the Maverick’s non-traditional unibody construction, the RetraxPRO XR fits snugly, as if it were installed on a traditional separated pickup bed.

Step 30:

The locking mechanism is protected by a rubber cover and allows the tonneau to not only be locked in the full open or full closed position, but any position along its travel. The T-slots also permit accessories, such as crossbars, to be used in conjunction with the tonneau cover.

Step 31:

The RetraxPRO XR can also be operated with the tailgate up, giving easy access to the bed space.
