To celebrate our product designers’ hard work, we created a new product design question-and-answer series called “Real Answers,” sharing the back story of our latest and greatest truck accessories. Today, I'm incredibly excited to sit down with Eric Boyle, the team leader responsible for the creation and production of our revolutionary new RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 Full Bed Access Manual Retractable Tonneau Cover w/ T-Slot Rails. Eric Boyle: Thank you for having me. We are very excited about this new product and addressing one of the Retractable category's biggest pain points. 

Frank Bisciotti: Let's dive right in. The RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 has garnered significant attention, particularly for its groundbreaking features. From a product design perspective, what was the primary objective when embarking on this project?

Eric Boyle: Retractable bed covers offer best-in-class features when compared to other tonneau cover types, except for one area: the tradeoff of cargo space. Other retractable bed covers have a canister that sits at the front of the bed and extends about 10 inches towards the back of the truck. While often that space is not needed, truck owners know there are times when every inch counts. Whether it's hauling a couch or an ATV, there are times when using your full bed space is necessary. With EZ-OFF, the canister can quickly and easily be removed in seconds, giving you full bed access. This product addresses the biggest drawback of retractable covers.

Frank Bisciotti: "EZ-OFF™ Full Bed Access" is a bold claim. Can you elaborate on how the FRC-4000 achieves this, and what the benefits are for the user?

Eric Boyle: We have designed a split rail and latching system that allows the canister to be removed while the rails of the product stay in place. We have also taken great care to design canister lift handles that are intuitive to install and remove. To remove the canister for full bed access, two people only need to open the cover, install and secure the lift handles, unlatch the rail connections, and lift the canister out of its place. This process takes less than 1 minute, and it is just as easy to reverse.

Frank Bisciotti: That's a significant improvement. Beyond accessibility, security is always a top concern for truck owners. How does the RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 address this?

Eric Boyle: Security was top of mind when designing this new bed cover. The RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 uses double-walled aluminum slats and is designed to support up to 500lbs of distributed load. Our keyed external lock makes sure your cargo is safe and secure. 

Frank Bisciotti: Five hundred pounds is impressive! Speaking of convenience, what about the day-to-day usability and longevity of the RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000?

Eric Boyle: This cover features our CoreTrax ball bearing rollers. These bearings make the cover operation ultra smooth and mean that the cover does not require any maintenance. This cover is made with scratch-resistant powder-coated aluminum and is designed to outlast your vehicle.

Frank Bisciotti: The “InfinityLatch™ holds open in unlimited positions" also sounds like a great feature for cargo management.

Eric Boyle: That's right! Our TraxLatch allows you to stop the cover in any position. That means you can trap cargo between the cover and the tailgate, allowing you to adapt to whatever you may be hauling. 

Frank Bisciotti: Durability in extreme conditions is crucial for truck accessories. How did the RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 stand up to testing?

Eric Boyle: The cover has undergone extensive testing, such as cycle testing, durability testing, and climate testing. It has been tested in conditions ranging from -40°F to 180°F, so you know you can always trust it to perform. We even had the cover tested with live grizzly bears! 

Frank Bisciotti: Many truck owners want to integrate other accessories with their bed covers. Is the RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000 retractable bed cover compatible with racks and other gear?

Eric Boyle: Yes, it features our integrated T-Slot rails. This means the user can add various bed accessories, such as cargo racks. Our T-Slot rails are designed to be compatible with most accessories from major brands. We have designed the product so that the accessory rails may still be used even when the canister is not in place.

Frank Bisciotti: And what about the smaller details that enhance daily use?

Eric Boyle: Great question. Going back to our TraxLatch, we have redesigned our latching system from the ground up. This new latch design was created with ergonomics and ease of use in mind. The pop-up design opens with the press of a button. Additionally, this product features a protective canister wrap that protects your canister from cargo damage and keeps your cover looking new.
