We love watching nostalgic truck commercials. The cartoonishness of the '70s, the overly pastel and enthusiastic exuberance of the '80s, and the teenager attitude of the '90s are fun to laugh at, but seeing these trucks in their birthday suits – before we all crashed 'em, stickered 'em, lifted 'em, painted 'em, and all other manner of hell we put these trucks through – is a real treat for us truck nerds. Here are the best classic GMC truck commercials. Enjoy.
Table of Contents:
We are starting with the earliest of the lot. This 1972 GMC truck commercial not only features a very cool truck, but it’s also pretty creative compared to many of its competitors’ commercials. Everything about this one is rad: The music, the truck, and the concept.
Oh, hell yeah. Now this is what we came here for. First of all, I know. This isn’t a GMC truck, per se, but not only is the GMC Jimmy as truck-y as anything out there, it’s also called a truck by the voice-over guy in the commercial. Hand. Face.
More importantly, we all got to watch Jimmy get pushed off a bridge and go bungee jumping. The truck: Awesome. Bungee jumping: Awesome. The '90s: Awesome.
THE JINGLE! I love a cheesy jingle, but this one almost has me feeling a little lactose intolerant. Many of these nostalgic truck commercials are fun reminders of the older days, but this one is almost painfully '80s. There’s kitschy, then there’s:
“Expand your horizons. See all you can see. Pick up your life with GMC. GMC. GMC. A Truck you can live with!”
Here’s a rarity. It’s not common to see many truck commercials this old trying to sell 6.2-liter diesels. Hell yeah. Look out, 18-wheeler, a big diesel is coming through – and a little yellow S-15.
Ah, a classic. The peaky voice over, dramatic John Carpenter music, the goofy actor… this is peak nostalgic GMC truck commercial.
Not that it needs saying (writing), but I don’t care who you are, this fresh ‘88 GMC Sierra raging around the canyon is completely rad.
This one is another that is fun because of how unique it is in the space. I mean, we’re pretty used to seeing dudes dressed like cowboys loading hay into a GMC Sierra or a Ford F-150 getting mashed down with a small planet’s worth of rock or whatever. But this GMC commercial shakes things up and deserves a little nod.
Ok, as far as GMC truck commercials are concerned, this one ain’t the truckiest, but from a nostalgic point, it's rock solid. Don’t get me wrong, the crispy GMCs are sweet, but nostalgic commercials are so, because of the cultural touchpoints they hit, that are often no longer relevant, or even forgotten. Sports or cultural figures from a bygone time are what make us go “Oh, man. I remember that!” This one nails it, because plenty of people remember that Kansas V. Davidson game.
Ok, so this one isn’t a commercial. But it still has, what we all came here for; tons of footage of factory-fresh vintage GMC trucks.
I believe this video is only one of many dealer videos, meant to train salespeople, in this case, on the “commercial class” GMC trucks. It’s really amazing. Thankfully, for the sake of my job, this information isn’t overly relevant to today’s trucks, but this is as thorough and helpful as any “Year, Model Spec” article. Watch. Learn. Enjoy.
The training video spans a (long) 18 minutes. If you just want to see some fresh GMC big boys from the '70s, a few minutes will do ya, but if you want to really dig in on HD GMCs in 1979, eat your heart out.
