2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Tested

Updated on Aug 9, 2024

Toyota’s new Tacoma has a lot to prove. This new truck is following in the footsteps of Tacomas who have built a cult following as the most loved mid-size truck on the planet. Can the latest 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road live up to the reputation that precedes it? To find out we spent a week with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road to find out.

When it comes to the Toyota Tacoma, durability and surprising capability define this perennial favorite among enthusiasts. For decades the Tacoma has punched above its weight class and delivered impressive off-road ability with the correct set of aftermarket modifications. Toyota has slowly started to give customers serious off-road performance from the factory and this newest generation has taken things to another level. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road we tested represents the upper levels of off-road ability without reaching the pricey peak of the lineup. Picture the TRD Off-Road as a tasteful build with reasonable parts to improve off-road capability without breaking the bank or your back during daily driving. The best part is that all of this comes with a warranty right from your local Toyota showroom.

All-New Drive Train

The fourth generation N400 Toyota Tacoma is ushering in massive changes when it comes to drivetrain options. The trusty V6 of the prior generation is gone in favor of a boosted inline-4 that is sold à la carte or with hybrid assistance.

The i-Force branded T24A-FTS turbocharged inline-4 displaces 2.4 liters and produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The T24A-FTS uses a twin-scroll turbocharger for better response and reduced turbo lag. These respectable figures beat out the prior generation’s 2GR-FKS naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, which only produced 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. The torquey turbocharged engine isn’t just more powerful; it also delivers an improved fuel economy for 19 cities and 23 highways. Opt for the optional hybrid i-Force Max powered Tacoma and power rises to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque with a fuel economy improvement of 22 city and 24 highway.

Although our 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road was only powered by the turbocharged inline-4 this base drivetrain felt strong with a huge amount of low-end torque. Although we’ll miss the sound and proven reliability of the old V6, it’s hard to beat that shove off the line of the new turbocharged engine. There’s a faint sound of turbocharger during acceleration and with some aftermarket parts, you can easily enhance this wonderful noise.

To back up the new engine, the Tacoma now uses an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission. This new Toyota 8-speed automatic transmission is a massive improvement from the prior generation’s 6-speed automatic and works to improve the driving experience. Thanks to its smooth shifts you really don’t notice it during normal driving which is a hallmark of a great automatic. The best part is that when you need to make rapid speed adjustments, it’s quick to respond and works to keep the boosted engine in its powerband.

The change from V6 to turbocharged inline-4 is an enormous change for the Tacoma. The third-generation Tacoma went virtually unchanged for almost 10 years of production so the choice to introduce an all-new powertrain in the fourth-generation truck is a lot to handle for the Tacoma faithful. Thankfully during our time behind the wheel, we found the new engine and transmission to suit this mid-size truck favorite very well. The added low-end torque and more responsive transmission transform the driving experience and add welcomed performance to the Tacoma platform.

Off-Road Ability

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road has a lot to offer for customers looking to hit trails right from the dealership lot. For Tacoma customers seeking off-road capability from the factory the TRD Off-Road offers a great deal of capability while starting at only $41,000 or over $20,000 less than the top-tier Tacoma Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Thankfully this price deficit does not mean that Toyota skimped on performance. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road is one of the most well-rounded off-road packages offered on a mid-size truck at a reasonable price.

The TRD Off-Road package starts with the addition of external reservoir Bilstein dampers that allow for more suspension travel and better heat dissipation during high speed off-roading. These new dampers are also incredibly comfortable during daily driving without being too soft. To support this improved suspension travel, Toyota also includes an End Stop Control Valve (ESCV) technology for greater stability off-road. Toyota also adds a composite skid plate to protect critical drivetrain components as well.

Toyota opted for 33-inch BFG Trail-Terrain T/A tires which significantly improve off-road capability and ground clearance. The plastic front air dam found in lesser Tacomas is also removed to further support this Taco’s off-road focused agenda.

The TRD Off-Road also adds a host of electronically supported components to further improve these trucks' off-road capability. You can opt for an optional electronic front sway bar disconnect which significantly improves wheel articulation during highly technical off-roading. There’s also a selection of off-road drive modes that can tweak various systems and inputs for improved off-road performance. The Tacoma even includes crawl control and hill descent control for those who prefer to let the sophisticated computers handle all of the guesswork.

The Perfect Mix of Tech and Physical Controls

With this new generation truck, the biggest change by far is the all-new interior. Compared to the last generation Taco, this new Tacoma looks like a spaceship. The integration of modern ergonomics and the latest in infotainment tech has completely transformed Tacoma ownership. This modernization of Tacoma’s cabin does strip away some of the old truck charms, but these new systems are incredibly easy to use and don’t bring along the penalty many associate with modern tech.

Adding technology to the Toyota Tacoma is something owners have been waiting on for years. Sure, it’s great to have a capable truck, but on the inside where you spend all of your time, technology is vital. Now adding new tech can create numerous user interface issues, however, I’m happy to report that Toyota’s latest infotainment is excellent and easy to use.

Toyota has fantastic buttons and switches that feel purpose-built and rugged. You can control all major truck systems and the HVAC all with an array of easy-to-use buttons. You do not need to menu jump to access important controls. The rest of the truck is managed by a massive 14-inch touchscreen. There you can manage a host of Toyota apps and more importantly Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The large screen makes it very easy to manage your tech without being too distracted from the road ahead. This large screen is also vital to use the 360-degree camera system for everyday parking or careful off-road maneuvering. This split of controls between physical controls and the touch screen is executed to perfect and it’s hard to find a reason to miss the old Tacoma’s interior

Conclusion

The all-new Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road is a welcomed evolution to an iconic mid-size truck. Thanks to the inclusion of a brand-new drivetrain and a completely reworked platform, the new Tacoma is a responsive and comfortable daily driver. Its impressive off-road capability brings the Tacoma TRD Off-Road to new heights in both capability and appeal as the perfect all-rounder Tacoma on sale today. Toyota’s addition of technology modernizes the all-new interior without frustrating users. If you’re in the market for a mid-size truck the new Toyota Tacoma has to be on your list to test drive.
