What Are Locking Hubs?

Locking Hubs, also called manual locking hubs, are a popular upgrade for 4WD vehicles. These heavy-duty replacements delete finicky pneumatic hubs or constantly engaged unit bearings, reducing front differential/transfer case wear and bolstering reliability!

Unlike automatic hub options, Locking Hubs feature a manually actuated dial at the center of each hub that engages the front axles. When closed, the hub engages with the axle shaft; however, while open, the hub spins freely, reducing drag, increasing fuel efficiency, and preventing unnecessary wear and tear!

Manual Vs. Automatic Locking Hubs

So, what difference does replacing your vehicle’s automatic hubs with manual hubs make? Operationally, a manual hub-equipped vehicle requires slightly more effort to engage the 4WD system. Rather than merely turning a dial or moving a lever in the cab, you’ll first need to exit your vehicle, manually engage each hub, and then actuate 4WD in the cab. Disengaging 4WD is essentially the same process.

While automatic hubs may be more convenient, especially in rainy or muddy conditions, manual locking hubs are notoriously stout and reliable, making them the ideal choice for avid off-roaders.
