About Justin Lucas

Before diving into our interview with Lucas, let’s take a moment to learn more about the award-winning angler.

Early Life

Though currently representing Alabama, Justin Lucas was born on May 1, 1986, in Sacramento, California. As a youth, Lucas wasn’t much of a fisher. He explicitly states that, before the age of 11, he had no interest in the hobby. In junior high, Lucas became interested in the sport, joining his first tournament at just 13.  

While attending Folsom High School, Lucas’ continued participation in tournaments only fueled his interest in the sport. During a brief stint at a junior college, Lucas won his first tournament as a co-angler. Soon thereafter, he began pursuing professional angling full-time, and the rest is history.

Fishing Career

In his early 20s, Justin Lucas began taking the sport more seriously. He saved up enough money to relocate to Alabama, following in the footsteps of his idol, the late Aaron Martens. Lucas’ professional career officially kicked off in 2008, and he’s been competing ever since, amassing numerous victories and top finishes as both a Pro and Co-Angler.

Personal Life

Though fishing still eats up much of Lucas’ personal life, he spends nearly every second of free time with his wife, BreeAnna, and their two sons—Cooper and Decker. The family resides in Guntersville, Alabama.

Q: What inspired you to customize your truck to suit your MLF lifestyle?

A: I've spent my career on the road, so my inspiration to customize my truck definitely came from years of experience and knowing what products help me be more efficient when I am traveling for tournaments.

Q: What are some of your must-have truck accessories to transport your fishing gear?

A: My ARE cap is the number one most important piece of gear on my truck. I would also say the AMP research bed step is a very important piece of equipment that helps me get rods out of my Yakima TopWater and also helps me when launching my boat.

Q: What are some of your favorite spots that you like to fish at and drive to with your truck?

A: Honestly, there are so many great places all over this country and I have been lucky to see so much of it, but I'd have to put upstate New York, South Dakota, northeast Alabama, and eastern Tennessee as some of my favorite areas that I have been [to].

Q: What does the ultimate fishing truck mean to you?

A: The ultimate fishing truck, to me, means a truck that is comfortable for long road trips and helps me be more efficient while I am gone. The equipment I use from RealTruck plays a vital role in performing well in tournaments because it does both of these things for me very well

Q: What do you love about what you do?

A: I am an ultra-competitive person, so naturally, I love the competition side of what I do, but the big bonus is traveling all over the country and watching the sunrises and sunsets on beautiful bodies of water.

Q: You’ve had some huge wins in your time on MLF. Is there one moment in your career that is significant to you?

A: Winning back-to-back events on Sturgeon Bay and Lake Erie was a really special few weeks for me. It helped solidify my career at MLF and gave me a ton of confidence in my abilities to fish on the Great Lakes.
