While many would assume the nickname comes from an abundance of badgers in the state, that’s not the case at all. Lead mining was a massive industry in the 19th century, as the metal was frequently used in piping and industrial applications for its affordability and malleability. In Wisconsin, lead miners were said to dig into hillsides for shelter, like Badgers, hence the nickname.

It’s worth noting that some restrictions apply regarding the vehicle’s usage. An automobile with a vintage plate can only be operated under specific circumstances, including display and parade purposes, testing, maintenance, and storage.

Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to protecting the state’s rare plants, animals, and natural areas. Funds from purchasing an Endangered Resources license plate directly aid the Wisconsin DNR’s Endangered Resources fund, which works to identify, protect, and manage native plants, animals, and Wisconsin's natural communities.

In addition to the standard $15 new plate fee, Endangered Resources license plates require annual $25 donations to the organization. 

Green Bay Packers

Cheeseheads unite! The official Green Bay Packers license plate is a must-have for Wisconsin NFL fans, featuring a classic green-and-gold color scheme, the Green Bay Packers logo, and the Green Bay Packers text. 

In addition to the standard $15 fee, Green Bay Packers license plates require a $25 annual donation to Lambeau Field, which goes toward the stadium's maintenance and operating costs. 

Hobbyist

For true enthusiasts, leaving a vehicle stock isn’t an option—that’s where the Hobbyist license plate comes in. This license plate can be purchased for use on any vehicle 20 years or older with modified bodywork. 

The purchase of a Hobbyist license plate requires payment of a one-time $50 Hobbyist plate fee, as well as double the annual registration fee upon each renewal.
