In this month’s License Plate Roundup feature, we’re traveling to America’s Dairyland to cover some of the state’s interesting facts, history, and its most unique license plate designs. Whether you’re a Cheesehead, craft beer connoisseur, or a football fanatic, stay tuned as RealTruck takes LPR to Wisconsin.

Wisconsin: History and Interesting Facts

Before we jump into Wisconsin’s license plate system and its most unique plate graphics, it’s worth taking a quick look at the state’s unique backstory. From its early days as an American territory to acquiring its status as America’s Dairyland, Wisconsin has played a significant role in American history and culture. Learn more about the state in the section below.

When Was Wisconsin Established as a State?

Wisconsin’s path to statehood began in the late 1700s with the creation of the Northwest Territory, which later became the Michigan Territory in 1805. In 1836, the region was further refined into the Wisconsin Territory, which originally included parts of modern Iowa, Minnesota, and North/South Dakota.

After residents drafted and approved a new constitution, Wisconsin officially entered the union on May 29, 1848.

What Is Wisconsin Most Known For?

Wisconsin is a diverse state known for its agricultural roots. Known as “America’s Dairyland,” Wisconsin is one of the nation’s top cheese, milk, and butter producers—but that’s not all. Beer is a huge staple of the state, driven by early German immigrants. Milwaukee is known as the “beer capital of the world,” with notable breweries like Miller and Pabst setting up shop in Wisconsin.

How about tools? Every tradesworker is familiar with the big red brand—Milwaukee tools—founded in 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by Albert Seivert. The brand is known for producing some of the highest-quality power tools worldwide. Though the brand was acquired by Chinese manufacturer Techtronic Industries (TTI) in 2005, Milwaukee’s headquarters remain in Wisconsin.

Moto lovers also owe a great deal of thanks to Wisconsin, as it's the birthplace of one of the most iconic motorcycle manufacturers in the world—Harley-Davidson.

Natural features like Devil’s Lake and the Wisconsin Dells make Wisconsin a bucket list destination for nature lovers as well.

What is Wisconsin’s Nickname?

Wisconsin has a few nicknames, though the most notable include America’s Dairyland and the Badger State. The former stems from Wisconsin’s leading role in dairy production, including cheese, butter, and milk, while the latter stems from early miners.

While many would assume the nickname comes from an abundance of badgers in the state, that’s not the case at all. Lead mining was a massive industry in the 19th century, as the metal was frequently used in piping and industrial applications for its affordability and malleability. In Wisconsin, lead miners were said to dig into hillsides for shelter, like Badgers, hence the nickname.

Wisconsin’s Top License Plate Designs

Wisconsin is a state known for its hard work, blue-collar determination, and inspiring backstory. All of these qualities are evident in its standout license plate designs. Antique

If you own an antique automobile that falls under Wisconsin’s antique qualifications (a 1945 or older motor vehicle that hasn’t been altered or modified from the original manufacturer's specifications), consider ordering a Wisconsin Antique license plate.

It’s worth noting that some restrictions apply regarding the vehicle’s usage. An automobile with a vintage plate can only be operated under specific circumstances, including display and parade purposes, testing, maintenance, and storage.

The purchase of an Antique license plate requires payment of a $5 fee.

Collector

Similar to Wisconsin’s Antique license plate, the Collector license plate is a design that applies only to specific vehicles. The Collector license plate can be purchased by owners of a 20-year-old or older vehicle that isn’t modified from its factory state. To purchase a Wisconsin Collector plate, you’ll need to own another vehicle that’s currently registered in Wisconsin. Additionally, vehicles with a Wisconsin Collector plate cannot be operated in January without a temporary plate.

The purchase of a Collector license plate requires payment of a one-time $50 collector plate fee, plus double the annual registration fee at each renewal.

Ducks Unlimited

Ducks Unlimited is an organization that works to preserve the nation’s wetlands. Since its founding in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has helped to conserve over 9 million acres of wetlands in North America.

The purchase of a Ducks Unlimited license plate helps to fund wetland conservation efforts by Ducks Unlimited, including habitat enhancement projects that benefit waterfowl. In addition to the standard $15 new plate fee, Ducks Unlimited license plates require annual $25 donations to the organization.

Elkhart Lake's Road America

Celebrate this legendary, four-mile, 14-turn racetrack with the Elkhart Lake’s Road America license plate, which features a course map and “Road America” text. Since 1955, Road America has hosted numerous influential races and drivers. Each race season, the course holds over 500 events, with several weekends open to the public.

Purchasing a Road America license plate requires a $15 one-time fee.

In addition to the standard $15 new plate fee, Endangered Resources license plates require annual $25 donations to the organization.

Harley-Davidson (Share the Road)

Born in Wisconsin in 1903, Harley-Davidson is a cornerstone of American motorcycle culture. The company, which is still headquartered in Milwaukee, has deep roots in Wisconsin and motorcycle safety. Wisconsin’s Harley-Davidson/Share the Road license plate commemorates the quintessential motorcycle manufacturer and advocates for safe driving to keep motorcycle riders protected on the road.

In addition to the standard $15 fee, Harley-Davidson/Share the Road license plates require a $25 annual donation.
