For decades, Mopar’s truck division, RAM, has been a consistent force in the HD market. Reliable inline 6-cylinder Cummins powerplants crammed into robust steel bodies atop fully boxed frames make for an undoubtedly durable pickup truck.
While tried and true, this recipe has seemingly stunted the brand’s innovation in recent years. For instance, HD RAM trucks have boasted 6.7L Cummins engines mated to the 68RFE automatic transmission since midway through 2007—that’s over a decade and a half of the same general powertrain, save the 2019 Cummins revamp, which many view to have been a step in the wrong direction.
Moreover, RAM HD trucks have utilized virtually the same frame, cab, and bed configuration since 2010, save for new tech and aesthetic upgrades. Fortunately, that’s all changing with RAM’s announcement of its 2025 HD truck lineup—at least partially.
Stay tuned to learn more about the much-needed updates to RAM’s HD truck platform, from a fresh transmission to a revamped interior.
While RAM fanatics may have hoped for an all-new chassis, the big-three manufacturer has once again failed to deliver a considerable exterior redesign. Instead, RAM clung to the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra.
The 2025 RAM HD utilizes the same cab, bed, and potentially front fender as its predecessor—however, it receives a stylistic refresh. Premium split front headlights and a reworked grille grace the front end. Out back, redesigned C-bar taillights cradle the familiar tailgate.
Though welcomed additions, these new design elements are far from a total revamp of the previous year’s model. At its core, the 2025 RAM is still in its 5th generation, though it just may be the best, and hopefully final, version of the said age group.
Inside the passenger compartment, the interior is largely the same as in previous years', but that isn’t necessarily bad. The overall feel of the truck is similar, albeit with updated materials and a massively upgraded tech suite.
RAM graces fancier trims of the 2025 HD RAM with a 12.3-in. digital cluster. This enlarged screen pairs with a massive 14.5-in. infotainment system and an all-new 10.3-in. passenger display, which offers shotgun riders control over navigation, music, video streaming, and more.
Under the hood is where the real magic happens—or should we say, in the transmission tunnel. Though the coveted 6-speed manual has yet to return to the HD lineup and likely never will, the tired 68RFE 6-speed automatic finally finds a worthy home—the trash bin.
Since its release in mid-2007, the 68RFE has been the Achilles heel of the RAM HD lineup. It’s infamous for its weak overdrive clutches and sloppy shifts. Fortunately, RAM has finally invested in R&D for a new standard transmission–the ZF PowerLine 8-speed automatic, manufactured in conjunction with German manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen AG.
In addition to the new transmission, 2025 RAM HDs receive a reworked 6.7L high-output Cummins engine as the only diesel powerplant, eliminating the standard-output variant from previous years. This optimized, inline 6-cylinder delivers 630 horsepower and a gargantuan 1,075 pound-feet of torque, capable of towing up to 36,610 pounds. RAM also offers the 2025 RAM HD with the aging 6.4L HEMI, still delivering a respectable 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque.
The 2025 RAM HD boasts impressive specifications, though it still falls below Ford and GM's class-leading figures. Check out the performance spec sheet below.

While we would have loved to have seen a higher-displacement Cummins under the hood of an entirely reworked body, the 2025 RAM addresses several of the shortcomings that RAM fans have complained about for over a decade.
Upgraded tech, premium interior materials, and an all-new transmission are sure to improve an already exceptional experience from the RAM HD platform, and we can’t wait to see the refreshed trucks hitting the streets.
