Best Truck Wheels and Rims for 2024

Updated on Dec 15, 2023

Replacing your pickup’s bland factory wheels with a set of stylish aftermarket rims is one of the quickest and most effective means of completely altering its aesthetics and fitment, transforming a stock-looking rig into a personalized machine! With various colors, styles, constructions, and sizes available, your choices are practically limitless, which can be a blessing and a curse.

While this allows for endless customization, how are you supposed to narrow your selection to a single brand, style, and finish?

The experts at RealTruck are here to do the tough work for you; in this guide, we’re covering some of the basic wheel configurations, including style, construction, and finish, and outlining our expert’s top wheels for 2024. By the end of this article, you’ll have a style, finish, and potentially even model selected!

Popular Wheel Styles

Wheels come in several styles, ranging from classic bullet-hole faces to extravagant, directional, multi-spoke designs; but which is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at some of our most popular wheel styles on RealTruck.

Bullet Hole

Bullet hole wheels feature a simple design often found on wheelers and classic pickups. This style consists of a relatively flat face with multiple holes milled or punched around the bolt circle, resulting in a traditional and timeless appearance. Bullet hole wheels are commonly referred to as “Alcoa-style,” stemming from the illustrious forged aluminum wheel manufacturer that likely coined the design.

Concave

Concave wheels refer to the orientation of the face; like a concave lens, these wheels feature a face that bends away from the mounting flange toward the lip as it moves from the bolt circle. Narrower concave wheels often have little to no lip, whereas wider concave wheels likely will; however, not nearly as wide as “deep lip” styles.

Deep Lip

Deep lip wheels typically feature a flat or convex face that swoops inward as it moves away from the bolt circle. On wider wheels, this results in an extra-wide, deep lip. Deep lip wheels are commonly found in diameters above twenty inches and widths above ten, often stretching upwards of fourteen or sixteen inches!

Directional

Directional wheels feature a sweeping or digging design in which the spokes curve toward the front or rear of your vehicle. While most directional wheels all bend in the same direction, some styles, called “true directional,” feature designated left and right sides, ensuring all four sets of spokes appear to bend in that same direction.

Mesh

Mesh wheels feature several ornate, interlocking spokes that form a grid-like “mesh” pattern. Mesh wheels typically are not directional.

OE Replica

OE Replica wheels pull inspiration from popular OEM wheels like GM “snowflakes” and “five stars.” While mimicking the styling, OE replica wheels are often offered in alternative sizes, bolt patterns, and finishes.

Spoked

Spoked wheels are a relatively self-explanatory category. They feature a multi-spoke face, which may overlap with directional and mesh styles.

Vintage & Retro

Vintage and retro wheels are inspired by styling that’s come to pass, pulling inspiration from the 60s, 70s, and 80s decades. These wheels typically feature simple designs reminiscent of vintage steel wheels, ideal for retro builds and vintage pickups.

Popular Wheel Constructions

Moving on from styles, wheels also feature various alloy constructions, including steel, cast aluminum, and forged aluminum. Let’s look closer at the characteristics of each.

Steel

Steel is a tried and true alloy used for constructing wheels. This material is extremely durable; however, it’s prone to corrosion and is extremely heavy, which often reserves it for use on applications like police cars and work trucks. While not as flashy as their aluminum counterparts, steel wheels are the least expensive on the list, making them enticing to dedicated wheelers known to bend or damage a wheel on the trail.

Cast Aluminum

Though typically pricier than steel, cast aluminum is the least expensive of the aluminum constructions. These wheels are manufactured from liquid aluminum that’s poured directly into a mold, producing the main shape of the wheel. Cast aluminum wheels are lightweight and relatively durable, making them a popular choice for OEM and aftermarket wheels.

Over the years, casting technologies have improved significantly, resulting in flow-formed or “rotary forged” wheels. Rather than casting the entire wheel, including the barrel, flow-formed wheels consist of a traditional cast face whose outer circumference is compressed and stretched to form the barrel. This construction results in a wheel with fewer impurities and air pockets, thus creating a stronger and more reliable casting.

Forged Aluminum

Forged aluminum wheels are the lightest, strongest, and most expensive on the list; however, you’re paying a premium price tag for premium quality. These wheels are constructed from a billet aluminum “blank” that’s manufactured by pouring molten aluminum into a mold and then heating and compressing the mold into a final wheel-like shape. After the blank is created, it’s CNC machined into its final shape.

Due to the molding and machining process, forged aluminum wheels have a much tighter and denser grain structure than conventional cast aluminum. As a result, they’re far more durable and can be polished to a mirror finish without the fogginess of lower-quality cast aluminum.

Popular Wheel Finishes

Wheels come in several finishes, ranging from raw polishing to durable plating. Some of the most popular include:

Chrome/Polished

While these two finishes look similar, they couldn’t be more different from one another. Chrome wheels feature a thin layer of chromium that’s been electro-plated to the wheel's surface, providing a durable, corrosion-resistant finish.

On the other hand, polished wheels consist of aluminum that’s been sanded and polished to a mirror-like finish using micro-abrasives. Polished wheels may or may not feature a corrosion-resistant top coating; if not, they require routine maintenance to ensure a long-lasting finish.

Black

Black wheels have always been a common alternative to bright polished or chrome finishes, providing a sleek and stealthy appearance. These wheels are either powder-coated or painted in a sleek matte, satin or gloss black finish, providing exceptional corrosion resistance and durability.

Painted wheels feature a durable, automotive-grade liquid paint applied over the wheel’s surface, while powder-coated wheels are treated with an electrically-charged polymer powder that’s baked onto the wheel’s surface, providing a chip, scratch, chemical, oil, and UV-resistant finish.

It’s not uncommon to see black finishes on steel, cast aluminum, and forged aluminum wheels.

Bronze

In recent years, bronze wheels have become all the rage. This deep, golden color is ideal for those who want a flashier color than traditional black wheels but a subtle, more subdued finish than polished or chrome-plated wheels.

Like black wheels, the bronze coated may either be powder-coated or painted, depending on the manufacturer.
